Sustainability — Our Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

At Indonesia Private Tours, we believe that true luxury is inseparable from responsibility. We operate in one of the most biodiverse and culturally rich regions on the planet, and we hold a profound commitment to protecting its natural wonders and empowering its local communities for generations to come. Our sustainability policy is not an afterthought; it is a core pillar of our operational philosophy, influencing every decision we make, from partner selection to itinerary design. This is our pledge to ensure our journeys create a positive and lasting legacy.

Environmental Commitments

Carbon Responsibility

We acknowledge the environmental impact of travel and take concrete steps to mitigate it. For every journey booked, we calculate the total carbon footprint—including all international and domestic flights, ground transport, and vessel usage. We then purchase high-quality carbon offsets equivalent to 110% of this footprint from a VERRA-certified Indonesian reforestation project in the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Kalimantan, contributing to both climate action and orangutan habitat protection.

Marine Conservation

Indonesia is the heart of the Coral Triangle, the planet’s epicenter of marine biodiversity. We are committed to its protection. A percentage of revenue from every itinerary involving marine activities (e.g., diving in Raja Ampat, snorkeling in Komodo) is donated directly to the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) in Bali to support their marine protected area management and local conservation training programs.

Eliminating Single-Use Plastics

We have a strict zero single-use plastic policy for our direct operations. All our vehicles are stocked with reusable glass water bottles. We mandate that our primary hotel and vessel partners demonstrate a clear and audited plan to eliminate single-use plastics from all guest areas, providing our clients with co-branded reusable flasks upon arrival.

Community Commitments

Local Employment and Fair Wages

We are dedicated to ensuring that tourism revenue benefits the local economy directly. We maintain a strict policy of hiring Indonesian nationals for over 95% of our positions, with a focus on creating management-level career paths. We vet all our partners to ensure they pay fair, living wages and provide safe working conditions and benefits, in compliance with Indonesian labor laws.

Supporting Local Enterprises & Artisans

We actively design our itineraries to include and support local, community-owned enterprises. This includes sourcing meals from local warungs known for their authentic cuisine, arranging private workshops with master artisans to support the preservation of traditional crafts like Ikat weaving in Sumba or silver-making in Bali, and using community-owned guide services where they meet our safety standards.

Direct Community Projects

Beyond our operational policies, we invest directly in community-led projects. We are currently sponsoring a waste management and recycling education program in the village of Papagarang, near Komodo National Park, and funding a scholarship program for children in a remote village in the Baliem Valley, Papua, to ensure they can continue their education. Our commitment is detailed and transparent, and we welcome our clients to learn more and, if they wish, to visit these projects. For more on our vetting process, see our methodology.
